April 12 - 16, 2003
Every
year, the dates of the Tsechus for each region of the country are set by the
National Monk Body of Bhutan. Auspicious dates are chosen according to the the lunar
calendar and Buddhist astrological charts. Paro puts on one of the grandest and
most vivid Tsechus in the kingdom.
Tsechus are held annually from district to district and are a great time of rejoicing for
the Bhutanese.
Family members travel great distances to be reunited at this time of year. The Paro Tsechu is held each year in early to mid April with dates set by the lunar calendar as is Chinese
New Year.
The
Tsechu is a commemoration of the arrival of the Mahayana Buddhist saint Guru "Rimpoche"
Padmasambhava (747 CE) and his influence on Bhutan. [Tsechu
History]
Most Buddhist monasteries are closed to outsiders except during the tsechu
season. Now that the dates have been set, Druk Airlines will quickly sell all
available seats for this very popular festival.
